Day 2 of Community Workshops with Providence House

This morning, the staff and families met again for a second community workshop at the Glenmore residence. This week focused on collectively providing teaching artist Nicole Bowden with feedback on her initial proposal for the mural design for the recreation room.

Nicole’s initial design combined the elements and images that the group produced in our fist community workshop last week. These themes and images included community, nature, a “tree of life”, and children playing together.

The primary feedback provided by the group after being presented with a sketch of the design was that the colors should be more vibrant and saturated, to reflect the joyful and playful energy of the recreation room.

After the group discussion to collect feedback, the group transitioned into brainstorming ideas for a potential title for the mural. Each individual in the workshop came up with at least one word or phrase to be considered for the mural’s title, including “hope”, “growth”, “kid’s party”, “world of adventure” and more. To bring all of the ideas together, the final mural title is “Kid’s World of Adventure and Growth”.

The group then worked together on a banner to be presented in the mural cutting ceremony for the mural. Each participant sketched out a word from the title, and some additional elements were added to the banner such as motivational quotes and cartoons of children playing together.

The group will start painting the mural next week.
