“Kid’s World of Adventure and Growth” is Unveiled

Last month we had the incredible opportunity of celebrating the unveiling of the finished mural entitled “Kid’s World of Adventure and Growth” at the Glenmore Mural Project.

Guided by Nicole Bowden and Vic Ingram from the Brooklyn Emerging Mural Artist Coalition (BEMAC), this project has fostered a vibrant collaboration between residents and staff through art. BEMAC, known for supporting emerging muralists across Brooklyn, kicked off the initiative with an inclusive workshop where staff and residents brainstormed ideas for a new mural in our youth playroom. Nicole and Vic's expert facilitation sparked a creative journey for the community.

To make the mural project accessible to everyone, Nicole and Vic designed a paint-by-numbers system based on the collected ideas. This system allowed participants of all skill levels to contribute meaningfully. The subsequent workshops created a serene and welcoming atmosphere, turning the playroom into a creative haven. Equipped with an array of paints, brushes, shaping tools, and soothing music, the space invited residents and staff to add their personal touches over three weekly sessions. This collaboration underscored art’s ability to enhance connections and community spirit.

Vic Ingram expressed, “Interacting with the Providence House families and staff was incredibly rewarding. Seeing participants, some of whom were painting for the first time, embrace their creativity and surpass their own expectations was amazing. The collective experience of working on this mural made us feel like one big family.”

The project especially resonated with the children and teens, many of whom were new to painting. They eagerly shared their personal stories and previous art experiences, making the mural a canvas for their imaginations and inner thoughts. Nicole reflected on her experience as lead muralist; “For me the most fun I had while working on the mural, was convincing people of different ages and artistic background to join in on painting. Watching them realize just how much fun art could be and that there were no prerequisites to doing art was the icing on the cake”

The unveiling ceremony was a joyous occasion that celebrated the project's completion. The event was made even more special by a young resident’s reflection: "I really enjoyed this project. I got to meet and paint with various people in the building. Initially, I had doubts about my abilities." She added a quote to the banner that features the mural’s title, reflecting a lesson learned:

"I decided to add a quote after sitting next to my sister. A teacher once told me that instead of trying to be someone else, you should push yourself beyond your comfort zone."

Her quote, "Every Star Shines Differently," now decorates the banner above an illustration of one child giving a heart to another. This meaningful message will remain in the children’s playroom, symbolizing the project's impact.

This project has not only produced a mural but also strengthened bonds among residents and staff, creating a lasting legacy for future community members. We look forward to future collaborations with the Glenmore community, excited to explore new creative opportunities and continue building on this spirit of connection and artistic expression.
